Épuisement / Erschöpfung

2019 – ongoing

The Plateau de l’Arbois, west of Aix-en-Provence, is presented as a low-lying natural area offering pleasant views of the Sainte-Victoire massif and the Alpilles range. One readily imagines Jean Giono walking the many paths that criss-cross the region, attentive to the radiant nature he describes so cheerfully in Les Grands Chemins: “I listen too. The laurel whistles, the juniper crackles, the walnut snaps, the rain murmurs on the plateau.” The author of Manosque-des-Plateaux and The Man Who Planted Trees sang of a landscape of authentic beauty… but with an uncertain future. Today, on an out-of-the-way road near the high-speed railway station, thousands of tonnes of waste are piling up. This illegal dump appeared in the mid-2010s. Small at first, it grew considerably over the following years, to the point of becoming a genuine ecological disaster. To the rubble coming mainly from demolition and construction sites was added that of private individuals, who found here an opportunity to get rid of broken equipment and worn-out materials. Dealing with this vast site was long delayed, which made the situation considerably worse. But another kind of “treatment”, singular and unexpected, emerged: that of Jürgen Nefzger, who took it upon himself to photograph these soiled and degraded spaces. The artist returned to the site several times and, as his investigations progressed, made numerous photographs, building up a kind of archive or collection of images… A feeling of deep distress takes hold of us as all these images pass before our eyes. But it is above all a sense of vertigo that ends up prevailing, so relentlessly is the eye subjected to an endless accumulation of heaps and piles of every kind. Facing up to the waste or plunging into chaos: with the series Épuisement, the artist does exactly that, and seems to answer the call as fully as possible.
